You are invited to view different sequences, comparisons and details of the forest landscape in the Canary Islands.

Tamadaba (Gran Canaria) in the 20's and today
Both pictures are taken from the same place, but the chestnut trees, at least 80 years old, now hide the building. Recovery of the pine wood starts with ceasing to fell and use for grazing purposes.

Auxiliary belts
Auxiliary belts are used for support and to protect against forest fires. They occupy around 10 metres on each side of roads and tracks. They form a break in the vertical and horizontal continuity of vegetable fuel to prevent fire from spreading, while respecting non-pyrophyte species.

Open spaces
Repopulated areas are not armies of thin trees. Open spaces are left in order to reduce competition and enable the trees to grow more and better. They also reduce the danger of fire and obtain intermediate products.

Competition

The first few years of repopulation are critical for the trees' survival. This tiny briarwood (Erica arborea) seems to have survived in the shadow of the fern, although the bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) grows faster than the briarwood...

Symmetry
Straight and symmetrical margins is not our idea of nature. In this case, the repopulation process has followed the same border.

Quasi-autumn

This mixed mass is dominated by insignis pines and Canary Island pines, although we can also see chestnut trees and Aleppo pines in the front and eucalyptus trees on the peak. Only fires give Canary Island pine woods an autumn appearance, although in this case the drying species are "ringed" insignis pines, to allow oppressed Canary Island pines to receive some light.

Small Canary Island pine
These small, naturally regenerated, pine trees resprout after being chewed by rodents, particularly rabbits (Oryctogalus cuniculus), a species introduced into the Canary Islands. The possibility of these trees reaching adult status is remote. One way of preventing the tree's evolution is sprout selection and to artificially protect the plant with a mesh. Another measure consists of directly protecting the regenerated plant to prevent these situations from arising.
